Saturday 21st January brought St.Richard's and The Elms to Abberley for a triangular game. After a goalless first ten minutes, the second period brought quickfire goals from Josh, Archie and Tom with a consolation effort in reply for St.Richard's. The Elms also scored three against the boys from Bromyard to leave an interesting game at the end against Abberley. Whilst possession was even, Abberley made some catastrophic defensive howlers which allied to some incisive finishing saw a 5-1 defeat. Toby scored for the hosts as he had a go out of goal.
So on wednesday we travelled to Hereford with improvements to make. There were several positional changes and the addition of William at the back brought much needed solidity. Toby was inspired in goal, handling the ball with confidence. Tom found a new lease of life on the right flank and Josh provided a threat up front. The first half was even with both sides striking the crossbar, Abberley from a fantastic freekick by Tom. The second half began with Abberley looking lively and we took the lead when Josh poked home a cross by Ludo. Hereford fought back strongly and the Abberley goal led a charmed life as the boys bravely clung to their lead. A whipped freekick with only ten minutes to go was headed into our goal and when another good header brought Hereford the lead, it looked like our hopes would be dashed.
However as the final minute dawned and Abberley surged forward, Tom launched the ball into the box and it eluded everyone and nestled in the corner. A draw was a very fair result. This was the best performance of the season so far with howlers eliminated, tackles stronger, more composure on the ball and a better positional sense.
