1st VI Football: Winterfold 6-a-side tournament
Abberley beat Winterfold 3-1. Ed scored a couple of goals. The second was excellent as he hung out wide, received the ball to move upfield and struck it soundly to rattle in off the post. The boys enjoyed substantial periods of possession against the Downs but they just could not find the back of the net. By now everyone had made an appearance. Jonty in goal with Ben, captaining the side for the first time, taking care of defensive duties. We then played a combination of Douglas, Hector, Miguel and Henry in the middle with Ed and Max up front.
The Moor Park fixture was a steady 2-0 victory to Abberley. We threw caution to the wind again and played a more attacking line-up. Max and Ed were doing a good job of tracking back and frustrating the opposition while Hector danced through and scored a couple. Moor Park were by now on their last fixture and we perhaps benefitted from having our rest earlier on in the programme.
10 points from a possible 12 meant that only a victory against Beaudesert stood between us and the Ingle. By now though, the Abberley eight had used a lot of energy and they looked tired. Beaudesert were tall, passed the ball well and we struggled to gain control of possession. In the end the battling of Max, Henry, Hector and Ben was not quite enough and we were caught on the break several times to loose this last fixture 3-0 to a stronger team. A pleasing start though.
