1st XI boys cricket v Beaudesert (A) Lost by 115 runs.
1st XI v Beaudesert (A) Lost by 115 runs
Beaudesert 210, Abberley 95 (Harvey 36, Archie 30)
After 15 overs, tight bowling and keen fielding had restricted the Beaudesert innings to 60-1. The next 15 overs yielded 150 runs. One of our bowlers conceded 26 runs off one over, another 47 off 3. We had run into a formidable batsman in top form. He helped himself to 7 sixes and eleven fours, moving so quickly between 50 and 100 that one of our (less observant?) fielders asked, as the Beaudesert chap raised his bat, “Is that his fifty?”
In the face of this onslaught, our team laboured nobly but it was a beleaguered group that dragged themselves off the field for tea. Three, in particular, had performed really well: Poppy bowled her best spell of the season, returning 2-24 off her 6 overs, Max took 1-13 off six and Ed bowled his six for 32. However, 211 to win was always likely to be too much.
Losing six wickets for 26 runs made it less likely that we would win. The lad who had sent our fielders chasing all over Minchinhampton common now scattered stumps and bails far and wide at high pace. It was down to Harvey and Archie to mount a rear-guard action. Hesitantly, at first and then with increasing relish, they set about the considerable task of scoring half as many runs as our hosts. They added 61 before both succumbed and the game was effectively over.
