1st XI Football v Beaudesert (A)
With the Abberley pitches heavy and more rain forecast, the decision was made to play the fixture at Minchinhampton. Although this meant forgoing the familiar surrounds of home, it was nice to get four teams playing on grass pitches and there were some close matches, particularly in the first and second teams.
The firsts showed once again that they are capable of playing some good passing football, even out of defence. They came close to scoring thanks to Miguel playing a clever chipped pass through to Ed but the shot was stopped. Our back line looked a little nervous and the boys failed to deal with another corner kick, which was mis-cleared and ended up with the ball in the net. Jonty kept Abberley in the game and stopped a handful of strong shots while Douglas played deeper and sweeped up the loose ball to shore things us.
Beaudesert scored another immediately after half time through a long range shot. Jonty continued to play well and saved many more efforts. Hector meanwhile, latched onto a corner and saw his headed effort cleared off the line. Beaudesert made it 3-0 shortly before time through some nice passing. Quite uncharacteristic of this group to create so few chances in the final third; we must try to make better use Ed and Henry in our game against the Elms next week.
