1st XI Football v Packwood (away)
Ed wasted no time in picking up from where he left off at the weekend. He got on the end of the first through ball, took a couple of touches and drilled the ball into the top corner. 0-1 Abberley. In truth, the scoreline flattered us as we struggled to find our rhythm in midfield and take control of possession. Jonty kept us in the game with some fingertip saves. Some nice Packwood passing quickly brought the scores level and at half time the score was one a-piece. Lysander, making his first team debut, grew into his role of centre-half and showed calmness under pressure to mop up the loose ball alongside Doug. Charlie and Freddie were both solid and are working steadily on contributing to attacking plays when the time is right. Harvey came into the side after illness and played well in midfield. Always tricky to know when to press and when to sit in and protect the back four, he was good value alongside Max and Hector. Henry’s mission was to hustle, jostle and pressurise. Miguel completed the line up as an old fashioned number nine.
Packwood came out fighting and quickly took the advantage by playing the better football in the second twenty-five. By now the pitch was very heavy and it didn’t look like we could kick the ball far enough to reach our attacking threat. It was nice to see this young team keep fighting though and Max created some space for himself on the edge of the box and found the corner of the goal. We couldn’t live with the next cross though and Packwood converted a good opportunity to make it 3-2, looking like it was all over. Hector thought otherwise and set off on a marauding run that wound up with him one-on-one with their keeper and the ball in the back of the net. 3-3 it finished; good character shown by a young team.
