1st XI Football v RGS Worcester (Home)
The prospect of a Friday fixture had taken some of the players by surprise but uncertainties were swept aside as we went through our familiar warm-up routine in glorious sunshine. Brilliant to welcome RGS Worcester and bring a fixture to the Friday afternoon Games slot.
The team remained largely unchanged from The Elms. Will made his full debut and we stuck with an attacking formation.
Our visitors played good passing football and looked to counter at every opportunity, but Abberley tackled tenaciously and enjoyed spells of possession with a clear vision of what to do with the ball. We still look dodgy defending corners but Jonty was strong today in goal and was talking to his back line. Douglas and Ben took care of defence. Our midfield trio of Henry, Max and Hector did a pleasing job of spreading the ball wide, involving Ed and Harvey down the flanks. Ed played one beautiful cross field pass that spread the ball from one flank to another. The boys had turned up to play football!
Abberley made several good chances with Harry holding the ball up well. Hector came closest with a thunderous strike from outside the box that rattled the underside of the bar, bouncing onto the goal line without, seemingly, crossing it and therefore not quite making it onto the score sheet.
Miguel found the breakthrough though just as the cross country runners were catching their breath with Mr Richardson and Mr Beswick watching on. His finish was positive and found a bottom corner. It was greeted with a loud cheer from the crowd and the support of the other children was brilliant.
Not to be outdone by the Abberley rabble, RGS Worcester started the second twenty-five with a huddle and determined roar; game on. Adhering to the old cliché attack is the best form of defence, the blues piled on more pressure. Ed started to see more of the ball and went very close in a one-on-one situation while Harvey began to find space on the other side. Hector made things a little more comfortable towards the end with another fine individual effort, dribbling past a couple of players and finding another bottom corner. Final score: Abberley 2 – 0 RGS Worcester.
