1st XI Football v Winterfold
Harry in goal. Max, Miles and Jaspar at the back. Oscar playing right wing, Freddie, Luca, Moyo in the middle and Will T on the left. Algy and Hector up front. This was the team that took on Winterfold. A rugby 7s tournament had freed up a few places and allowed these boys to get a foot in the door. Winterfold, playing in maroon, elected to ‘stay as we are’. The boys have been working hard on shooting practice during training. Hector and Moyo quickly demonstrated a good understanding by finding the corners of the net from both inside and outside the box (2-0 Abberley). Next there was an unsettled period of play. Our possession was squandered as the boys overplayed in the final third, legs looked heavy and the back three seemed vulnerable. Sure enough, Harry was tested and did very well to limit the damage but eventually he was left one-on-one, a goal was scored by Winterfold and they had pegged Abberley back. Winterfold started the second half much stronger and quickly levelled the scores with an opportunistic goal that came from some uncertain Abberley defending. Miles dropped back to centre-half at this point and immediately steadied the ship with his excellent reading of the game. Jaspar, who had played well all match, began to find more success in linking up with Oscar. Will T found pockets of space deep inside the Winterfold half and was able to send in some inviting crosses. One of these found its way to Oscar who had the composure to find the top left corner amidst the melee. Final score Abberley 3 – 2 Winterfold.
