1st XIII finish the half term on a high
Report – 1st XIII v The Elms
Wednesday 18th October 2017
The 1st XIII finished off the first half of term with a committed and determined display against a strong and physical Elms team. As the game went on the whole team rose to the challenge and it was good to see how much the performance has developed since the start of the season.. The inside backs of Henry W, Harvey P, Ben M and Bill H broke the gain line and retained the ball effectively. The back three of Ed P, Hector G and Oliver B tackled well and carried the ball strongly. The forwards had their best game by far. Rucking and counter rucking was effective and some strong tackles were made by Jonty M and Sam B in particular. Douglas D ran powerfully with the ball and the youngsters of Will H and Ed L were never far from the ball. Rory H worked hard at the breakdown and got around the pitch well. The three reserves of Harry G, Kian H and Ben E all contributed well when they joined the match.
Harvey P led the team confidently and showed an increased tactical awareness from fly half.
At half time we were 0-3 down having slipped off a couple of tackles. The second half was a far more robust affair with a dogged defence throughout and a deserved try from Jonty M before a late try was conceded. Although the team lost, spirits were high after the game and everyone is now ready to push on after half term as competition for places increases.
