1st XIII/U13A : The season so far
Report – 1st XIII/U13A : The season so far
Clifton festival, Bromsgrove, St Johns on the Hill, Winterfold, Dean Close
This season we will be playing a mixture of U13 and 1st XIII matches. We took a squad of the boys available on the first Sunday of term to the Clifton Festival. It is always a great start to the season and we had two tough matches against St Paul’s and Clifton College and a good victory against Chaffyn grove.
We are a small and lightweight team this year but have some tenacious characters. Bromsgrove were far stronger than us physically but we had an excellent match thanks to the adjustments that the Bromsgrove coach made to their team throughout.
St Johns on the Hill was another tough match with one particularly physically dominant boy who rather spoilt the match as a competitive spectacle but our boys fought throughout and finished with a lot of credit.
Winterfold had asked for a mixed team to play their 1st XIII and the team we selected enjoyed a great contest resulting in four tries each.
Dean Close were another strong team but the U13 team competed very well at the breakdown particularly and mounted a wave of attacks only to be thwarted by stronger boys whose pressure eventually kept breaking a resilient defence.
Hector C is captaining by example and never taking a backward step. Will H is providing a strong base at centre and was badly missed against St Johns. Lysander M-E is controlling play well at Fly half. Max W, Freddie C and Ed L are proving effective forwards and it was good to get Kit C back in action against Dean Close. Sebastian T, Oscar N and Will T are punching well above the weight and it was great to see Ricard E and Hector A playing in their first U13A matches against Dean Close. Jimmy H has carried the ball powerfully.
The younger boys and in particular Ed-R-D, Will R, Wilfred B, Rory D, Joe S and Jim B, Miles H and Luca B have made strong contributions so far and it was good to see Moyofoluwa M playing powerfully, scoring two tries in the U12 match against Dean Close. Harry G is showing great potential up front and Algy O is having to adapt to several positions due to the abundance of scrum halves in the squads.
Ed P has been badly missed after making a very promising start to the season and we look forward to having him back in action when his finger has recovered.
We look forward to welcoming Bromyard rugby club on Saturday and then Monmouth next Wednesday before the first Long Optional weekend.
