1st/2nd XI Football v Moor Park (A)
A large squad of fourteen boys were selected for an away fixture at Moor Park. It was an even match and Abberley were fortunate that two deflected shots led to goals in a fixture that saw them struggle to spread the ball wide.
Moor Park took an early lead through a well struck free kick. This was an effective reply to the threat of Hector and Miguel who had come close with some nice quick passing in the final third. Abberley continued to work but struggled to find their shape in midfield. Lochy and Hector dropped deeper after some time and saw some success in collecting the loose ball and redistributing wide to Freddie and Harry. Miguel soon found himself through on goal and finished well to make it 1-1.
The finest move of the match belonged to Moor Park, where an easy-on-the-eye defence splitting pass and a neat one-two ended up with the ball in the net, but unfortunately from an offside position. Thus it remained 1-1 at half time.
The second half afforded Abberley the opportunity to make three changes, with Henry and Oscar playing on the left and Archie upfront. Given time on the ball, Archie can be relied upon to strike the ball with accuracy and power. This proved to be influential in the course of the game as he took a long range curling shot that hit the inside of the post. The ball could have gone anywhere but cruelly bounced in off the Moor Park goalkeeper to give Abberley a perhaps undeserved lead.
Hector, captaining the side, played selflessly for the remainder of the match, sacrificing chances of individual glory by dropping back and protecting the defence; making crucial tackles and always distributing to wide outlets when possible. An unfortunate late ricochet made the final score Moor Park 1-3 Abberley.
