2nd XI Football v. Wycliffe (h)
A bit of a strange match; for twenty minutes Abberley seemed reluctant to commit numbers forward and attack, but the passing football came back in the second half and goals were scored.
An enthusiastic yet ill-timed tackle led to the award of an early penalty in favour of Wycliffe. The resulting spot kit was smashed over the bar and the normal order of a goalless opening three minutes was restored. It didn’t take our visitors long though, to find the net. Some neat passing in the box resulted in a drilled shot that sneaked in at the near post. Abberley looked rattled but gradually found their rhythm. Charlie was influential in midfield; applying pressure on the goal kick and others followed. Lochy started shifting the ball wide to Gus and Freddie sidestepped his way out of trouble and played the ball through to Oscar and Archie. Sebastian, Lysander and Ryan linked up effectively on the right hand side and suddenly the balance swung in favour of the home side.
The second half saw Sam and Rory limit the Wycliffe attack while Ollie distributed well through some quick drop kicks. The breakthrough came through Bill and his long throw-in. He launched one deep into the box which found its way to Archie’s feet, who found a corner and levelled the contest. Moments later Lochy came back on to pick up a loose ball on the edge of the box. He took a well placed shot that made it through the melee and into the back of the net. A great moment for the team and some wild celebrations made it 2-1 Abberley with about eight minutes to go. This is how it finished.
