3rd XI v Beaudesert (A) Lost 4-0

3rd XI v Beaudesert (A) Lost 4-0

In scenes at times reminiscent of Custer’s Last Stand, we were thoroughly outplayed by a more skilful home team. Several Abberley boys distinguished themselves, nevertheless.

Hector, in goal and therefore at the centre of most of our rear-guard action, was our man of the match. A little inexperienced, he may have been, but his handling was remarkably secure for one who had never pulled on a pair of 'keeping' gloves before. Having made a couple of athletic saves, midway through the first half, he stood in his six yard area and shouted over to me: "Can I handle the ball inside the big box or just in this little one?"

Dima, Ed and Daniel also had their work cut out in defence. Will and Jaspar fought tenaciously in the midfield. Penned back into an increasingly muddy region surrounding our goal, Abberley had the strength to withstand our hosts only for so long. It is true that the ball did leave our half of the pitch from time to time, but not often for long enough to bring Beaudesert’s goalkeeper out of his slumbers. 2-0 down until the last five minutes, there was much for our team to take pride in, so it was a shame that Beaudesert scored twice more, successfully accomplishing the inevitable.
