3rd XI v The Downs (A) Won 3-0

3rd XI v The Downs (A) Won 3-0
Football, the beautiful game. This was nothing like that. If you haven’t seen the footage of Todd Carty careering off stage part of the way through his Dancing on Ice routine eight years ago or Disney’s unforgettable icy scene involving Bambi and Thumper, a few moments on YouTube might raise a smile. They would also give a fair impression of the degree of control exerted by the hugely enthusiastic teams contesting this match.
The match was played on sodden astroturf so the ball skidded almost comically. Longer kicks resembled Barnes Wallis bouncing bombs and short ones gathered pace, apparently defying the laws of physics. Legs flailed hither and thither, often in totally committed but unsuccessful attempts to kick the ball, sometimes knocking it forwards and sometimes into the path of teammates.
Neither team looked likely to score for much of the first half. But one of the Downs boys did bundle the ball over the line to make the score 1-0 just before half time. In the second half Abberley dominated the game territorially. Two more goals from Downs strikers demonstrated the superior physical presence of some of their players. Outstanding in our team were Hector, who never stopped running and Dima, who has developed the ability to be in the right place at the right time.
Also outstanding were the Downs boys who played for Abberley. It is a curiosity that we should have won 3-0 without scoring a single goal; all those goals were scored by these guests in our side.
