A good turn out for a sunny Abberley Relays
Abberley Relays X-Country Competition
Sunday 5th February 2017
Despite the rather gloomy morning the mist cleared and we had a glorious day for the Abberley relays cross-country competition this year. Sixteen schools took part with two hundred and eight runners competing. Many of the runners on Sunday had also braved the flat yet very boggy conditions at Pinewood on Thursday but were keen to take on the challenge that the steep hills of the Abberley Relays presents. This was the twenty fourth running of the event and some excellent performances were produced. Twenty three teams competed in the U13 race and twenty nine teams competed in the U11 race. The unique nature of the Relay format makes not only the team competition exciting but also the split times make for fascinating viewing and plenty of competition within the teams themselves.
Cheam, as ever put in a dominant performance but there were also wins from Pinewod, The Downs and Prestfelde this year. Cheam won the U13 Boys’ and Girls’ races. Pinewood won the U11 Girls’ race and there was a dead heat finish between The Downs and Prestfelde in the U11 Boys’ race. Forty Abberley runners competed in the four races, a couple at very short notice when runners had to drop out through injury and illness. The U13 Boys finished 9th out of 14 teams, the U13 girls finished 5th out of 9 teams, the U11 girls 7th out of 13 teams and the U11 boys 6th out of 16 teams.
The results were as follows;
U13 Boys Cheam, The Downs Malvern, Prestfelde
U13 Girls Cheam, St Hugh’s, Pinewood
U11 Boys The Downs Malvern and Prestfelde equal, RGS the Grange
U11 Girls Pinewood, Cheam, The Downs Malvern
