Abberley 1st XI Football v The Downs, Malvern (home)
Jaspar moved up to the 1st XI and shared responsibilities at right back with Harry. These two have worked hard and listen carefully, using their strength effectively to win defensive tussles and look to play out through wide channels. Abberley, always looking to play passing football, had several clear chances in the opening ten minutes. Lysander, Moyo, Ed, Hector and Rory passed neatly, and they could have taken the lead with some more clinical finishing. The midfield battle was being won, though, by the Downs, Malvern. Their superior height and strength presented a tough afternoon for Rory, Ricard and Freddie. The other talking point was the Downs throw-in specialist. Sometimes his foot left the floor and a foul throw was declared but more often than not the ball was launched deep into the Abberley box and this is how they broke the deadlock.
Abberley worked harder in midfield during the second half. It was heartening to see Ed R-D, Rory and Fred look wide at any opportunity. Lysander ran off the ball with purpose and Will H played Moyo in several times. Harry B-V kicked effectively despite blustery conditions and a stubborn nosebleed, showing real intelligence to roll the ball short when safe to do so. Ed P made the score 1-1 by converting a penalty that was awarded to Hector, who had skillfully beaten two boys in the box before being tripped up. The Downs eventually broke down the right and a speculative cross/shot found its way into the net, aided perhaps by the blustery conditions. Final score, Abberley 1 – 2 The Downs, Malvern.
