Announcement of New Headmaster Abberley Hall School

The Board of Governors are delighted to announce the appointment of Jonnie Besley as the Headmaster of Abberley Hall School from September 2020.

Jonnie, currently the Deputy Head Pastoral at Orwell Park School in Suffolk, graduated from Durham University with a degree in English, History and Philosophy and completed his PGCE at Cambridge University.

Having taught History and coached sport at Dulwich College Prep School, he went on to work as Head of History and Head of Boarding at Westbourne House in West Sussex before joining Orwell Park in 2015. In his spare time Jonnie enjoys ‘the great outdoors’ and has recently built a number of tree houses!

Jonnie will be joined at Abberley Hall School by his wife Tessa, who is an experienced prep school teacher and their two young children.

Chairman of Governors, James Tanner said “The Governors of Abberley Hall School are delighted that Jonnie and his family will be joining us in September. From an impressive selection of candidates Jonnie’s wealth of experience as well as his great enthusiasm and passion to take Abberley Hall forward stood out. This is an exciting new chapter for our school and in warmly welcoming Jonnie and his family to Abberley, the Governors would like to thank Will and Beth Lockett for their great contribution to the school and wish them all the very best for the future when they depart at the end of the Summer Term”.

Jonnie said “I am delighted to be joining Abberley Hall as Headmaster from September. Tessa and I were hugely impressed with the school throughout the selection process and were particularly drawn to its family ethos, the warmth of its atmosphere, the manners of the children and its stunning rural setting. We feel incredibly privileged to have been chosen to lead the Abberley community through this next exciting chapter and we can’t wait to get started. We look forward to visiting during the coming months, to introducing our children to the school, and to getting to know staff, pupils and parents. Let the adventure begin”.
