Colts B v Beaudesert (A) Won 11-6
One of the most memorable occasions in my childhood was a trip to the circus. Somewhere there is a photo of the five-year-old future rugby coach beaming through a full clown-face – I had been the lucky one selected when the real clown had asked for volunteers to be made up in the middle of the ring. Whilst some may take the view that I haven’t progressed much since that day, I actually felt more like the ring-master as I watched the match at Beaudesert.
Just as the ringmaster retires from the action and takes credit for the performers’ skills, I watched with paternal pride as the Colts B team, with their differing shapes, sizes and skill sets, entertained the enthusiastic audience memorably. There were bullocking runs from some, sleight-of-hand from many, especially David and Elliott, and a sense of teamwork which was the best feature of all. Tries were scored by Michael (4), Elliott (3), David, Archie, Billy and Sam. Our opponents had plenty to offer, as well, so a memorable afternoon’s entertainment unfurled before us.
Apart from half-time, the only interruption to the frantic action in this high-scoring encounter was the arrival of a cocker spaniel which had hopped over the dry stone wall from the common. Gleefully ignoring its owner’s pleas to return to her, it strutted around for a short time as pleased with itself as our team were as they left the arena at the full-time whistle, luxuriating in a job well done.
