Colts Rugby Sevens success
Having had an excellent rugby term before Christmas, when improvement had been the aim for every session and match, the squad went into two festivals this term with great spirit.
At the Packwood Festival with amazing February weather, we played 5 matches. If we had been a little sharper in the first five minutes against Prestfelde in the first game, we could have defended out line more rigorously and come away with a win, rather than a draw. However, we took the lessons from that and applied them all day, beating Altringham, Terra Nova and St. Mary's Hall and drawing with Packwood. Well done for being unbeaten all afternoon at a very good festival.
Saturday was likely to be a different contest altogether. Playing at the Kings Worcester Festival, we were in a group with 4 teams who were all much stronger than the opposition at Packwood on Wednesday. During the 9 a side season, we had lost heavily to Hawford in October and had a very exciting draw against Warwick in November, so we knew that we would be up against it.
However, we played some amazing VIIs to beat Kings St Albans, Warwick, Hawford and finally The Croft. All the games were closely contested but Abberley's skill and resilience came to the fore and, allied with the power of our ball carrying, we scored 12 tries over the morning and won all 4 games.
At the end of the Festival, the team who took the Shield home was not the team who won all their matches, but the team who played the best rugby in the best spirit. It was lovely to hear the referees and other coaches unanimously vote for Abberley. They referenced the fact that all the boys played a role in the team, not just 2 or 3 standout players, as well as their passing ability and finally their willingness to play for each other. Without a doubt these are true Abberley characteristics!
Well done to all the squad: Oscar, Rufus, Ed M. Ed C, Duncan, Guy, George, Lawson and Harry.
