Great competition at The Abberley Relays on Sunday

Abberley Relays X-Country Competition

Sunday 3rd  February 2019

After the difficult weather in the week leading up resulting in some teams being unable to travel we had a glorious yet cold day for the Abberley relays cross-country competition this year. Ten schools took part with one Hundred and fifty runners competing in 37 teams. Unfortunately, the competition on Thursday at Pinewood had had to be cancelled due to the weather so the schools and runners were even more keen than usual to take on the challenge that the steep hills of the Abberley Relays presents. This was the twenty sixth running of the event and some excellent performances were produced. Sixteen teams competed in the U13 race and twenty one teams competed in the U11 race. The unique nature of the Relay format makes not only the team competition exciting but also the split times make for fascinating viewing and plenty of competition within the teams themselves.

In the under 11 races The Elms won the girls’ race and The Downs won the Boys’ race with Abberley coming second in both. In the U13 races The Downs won the Girls’ race and RGS won the boys’ race with Abberley coming third in both.

Twenty six Abberley runners competed in the four races with Kitty B recording the fastest time in the U11 girls’ race and Yoan H-B recording the third fastest time in the U11 boys’ race. Many of the Abberley runners were very young and have at least one year left to run in the age group. We had one year 3, (Jonathan E), three year fours (George B, Sebastian H and Beatrice S) and four year fives (Kitty B, Henry H, Oscar H and Nell T). Ten of the senior runners were also a year young so things look good for the future.
