Children’s Mental Health Week 2021
February began with Children’s Mental Health Week and we had lots of exciting activities lined up to support the programme.
Monday morning started with a Headmaster’s assembly where Mr Besley focussed on the importance of children learning about and understanding their own mental health. Throughout the week, children and staff were encouraged to express themselves in many different ways. One of the most popular was ‘Dress to Express’ which resulted in some fantastic (and sometimes humorous) outfits! The pupils were also encouraged to express themselves through other activities such as baking and dancing.
One of the highlights of the week was an inspiring webinar from Emma Carpenter (who used to work at Abberley as a PE teacher and games coach) with her son Henry (who is an OA and current student of Malvern College). During the last lockdown Henry suffered a serious injury and was required to be airlifted to hospital. Despite his injury, on crutches, he has been undertaking a challenge of travelling 54 miles in 30 days to raise money for the Midlands Air Ambulance. He has raised over £6000 to date - 2460% of his original target.
We held the talk on Microsoft TEAMS and it was for all of the Prep School children and lots of parents as well. The talk was titled – ‘Take on the Challenge, Be At Your Best’.
It focussed on making the most of challenging situations, being resilient, motivation and dealing with mental illness. As well as taking on physical challenges for charities. Both Emma and Henry spoke about challenges they had faced and how they had dealt with it. As well as giving advice to the pupils.
As part of an ongoing effort to support the mental health of our pupils and staff during lockdown, we encourage everyone to take part in ‘Screen-free Saturdays’ and to instead spend time on our hobbies like reading, riding or running. Whatever makes you feel good!
