The Design and Manufacture department consists of a purpose-built workshop, design studio and computer gallery for graphics, 3D printing and laser cutting. These facilities link directly with the Art and Design, ceramic, enamelling and textiles studios. The workshop areas are open during break times, lunchtimes and in the evening, allowing children to come in and work on projects throughout the school day.

Fundamentally, this subject is about problem solving and producing real solutions which can be tested and evaluated. Children learn how and why things work through practical tasks and relative theory, such as the properties of materials, structures, mechanisms circuitry and jointing techniques.

It is important to communicate ideas clearly in visual form and children learn how to work through the design process to answer a design brief. Pupils are expected to make aesthetic as well as practical judgements and are encouraged to work with increasing independence.

The aim of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) programme is to help link the core subjects together and show the students the practical and real-life application of what they learn in school. STEM helps open their eyes to new possibilities and demonstrates that school and education is not just about exams.
