U11 Girls win a tough race at the Abberley Cross-country competition
Abberley Hall X-Country Competition
Thursday 12th October 2017
We had perfect conditions for the annual early season Abberley Hall Cross-Country competition yesterday with bright sun and a dry, firm course. The one unavoidable mud patch in the woods did account for a few trainers and spikes but fast times were achieved. Ten schools were involved with one hundred and fifty runners competing. Many of the Abberley children were also involved marshalling around the course.
The under eleven boys and girls set off first. Harvey Shaw, from RGS and Lola Swinscoe, from The Downs (just pipping Emma C from Abberley on the line) won these races. RGS won the boys’ race and Abberley Hall the girls’ race.
Tom Birley, from The Elms, ran impressively to win the Under 13 boys’ race in a time of 10.19 with The Elms winning the team shield. Evie Hawkesford-Johnson, from King’s Worcester won the U13 girl’s race in another quick time of 11.41. The Downs won the team shield.
This event fell on the same day as the IAPS Hockey tournament for the U13 girls and so some teams were missing including Abberley. As well as the U11 girls winning their race the U11boys were 4th out of 10 schools and the U13 boys 3rd out of 7
All of the team shields were very closely contested with single points often deciding the final result. This emphasises the importance of every member of the team contributing. Five individual finishes in the top eleven and a first, third and fourth place in the team events was a good return for the first cross country event of the season. It was great to see younger runners experiencing competition.
