U11A v Lucton and HMSG
The Under 11A team enjoyed plenty of hockey this afternoon in a mini hockey festival against Lucton and HMSG.
The afternoon began with an action packed match against Lucton. We worked well together with the forwards setting up some well structured attacks on goal. Both Macy and Sophie scored three goals each by finishing excellent crosses and following up on other goal attempts. In defence we were also strong. Monica did not have much to do because Anastasia, Darcy and Matilda kept the ball away from the goal brilliantly. Anastasia also managed to stop two great shots on our goal through determined and early tackling. The final score was 6-0 to Abberley.
Our second match saw us take on HMSG A team. They were a fresh legged, well drilled and talented side so we went straight to work in defence. Monica had plenty of action this time saving many goals, sometimes with the far reach of her stick. In attack, we had plenty of possession with some exciting attempts on goal but a few too many of our passes went straight back to the opposition. We also did not make enough use of Molly and Grace on the wings, leading to congestion in the centre of the pitch at times. Darcy’s arrival on the pitch in the later stages of the first half was much appreciated as she displayed firm tackles and effective clearing of the ball out to the wings. Matilda M made a few encouraging attacks on goal with her solo run at the start of the second half displaying particularly impressive ball skills and determination. Unfortunately their goal keeper was ready for her so no goal resulted that time. At the other end, one fast break from Monmouth and two well worked attacks meant that the final score was 3-0 to Monmouth.
Our third and final match, against Monmouth B team, was an exciting one to watch with possession being equally well shared, good breaks by both teams and excellent defence at both ends. The first half ended 0-0 but a ball to the hand meant that our fearless centre-mid, Sophie, had to leave the pitch. This was a real shame because she had been working incredibly hard and making excellent interceptions all afternoon. Whilst our players adapted to their new positions, Monmouth scored an excellent goal from fast turnaround, our defence just didn’t make it back in time. The match continued to be evenly balanced until the final whistle confirmed the score was 0-1 to HMSG B.
So overall, one convincing win, one defeat and a close shave but most importantly plenty of hockey, lots learnt and smiling faces all around. Just the way we like it.
