U12 v Christ College Brecon (H) Lost by 7 wickets
Abberley 84 -7 (Max 47)
One of the features of Sports Day that always attracts attention is the little brothers’ and sisters’ race. It is one of the most challenging tasks of the year for the PE staff to gauge how much of a head start Claude (six and docile) should give Annette (five and frisky) or Bertha (four and rotund). Only the most skilled judge of physical prowess and fighting spirit can come close to organising the photo finish so much enjoyed by the patrons on such occasions.
Sadly, we didn’t get the same calculation quite right against Christ’s; we gave them far too much of a head start. After 9 overs, our technically strong but slightly naïve batsmen had scored 29 runs. Our opponents almost doubled that in their first 9 overs, and it was in these earlier stages that the gap between the teams opened up. Our guests batted with resilience and muscle in pursuit of a total that owed everything to Max. His 47 was almost double what the rest of the team managed combined.
Abberley performed well in the field, with Max and Ed conceding just 16 runs in total from their 8 overs. Ed also caught an excellent catch at long on. However, the result was never in doubt once it became clear that we had handicapped ourselves a bit too generously and our opponents were playing very well.
