U13Cs vs Cheltenham College

Abberley U13Cs took on Cheltenham College on a beautiful bright autumnal day. Cheltenham had brought a large squad with them, so we played four quarters to allow plenty of substitution while allowing our smaller team to have short breaks in between play.

The first quarter was an exciting one with early pressure from Cheltenham requiring Julia to make several impressive saves in goal. We fought hard, but they retained a lot of the possession. We were quite easily drawn out of defence and in a one on one towards the end of the quarter, a goal slipped past Julia making the score 1-0 to Cheltenham.

The second quarter was more evenly balanced in terms of possession, but the goal tally went against us. Cheltenham managed to put two more goals past Julia. Some great passing between Grace and Macy kept things going though, and we did manage to score when Harriet took on their goalkeeper with a direct shot. The goalkeeper got her foot to the ball, but it trickled over the line bringing the score at half time to 3 – 1.

The third quarter was our most influential; we held a lot of the possession and fought well in defence, holding the score at 3-1. Scarlett played brilliantly making several strong tackles, and Chloe made space by moving well as a forward. I was impressed to see our team willing to try out new positions with Harriet playing well at left-wing and Macy holding her own brilliantly as centre–mid.

After a few more changes with Anastasia trying out centre mid and Darcy moving to the wing, the girls thoroughly enjoyed the final quarter, working hard to support each other. Some brilliant passes from Grace found more players on the wings than in the previous quarters. It became clear that using the full width of the pitch is something that will benefit this team in future games.

At the end of this busy and exciting game, the final score was 4-1 to Cheltenham College.
